SPOX: Mr. Reimer, you have already told us a lot about your passion for baseball in an earlier interview. But how do you feel about the other US sports?
Jochen Reimer: I like them all!Ice hockey anyway, that’s for sure.Although I have to say that I’ve gotten a little bit away from basketball in the last few years.I don’t know if I’m saying the wrong thing here, but I used to be a big basketball fan.And college basketball as a sport, I love it.But the NBA doesn’t seem to like me anymore.
SPOX: What is the reason for this?
Reimer: First of all, there’s no defensive action, secondly, I think this whole show is completely exaggerated.
SPOX: What do you do with this?
Reimer: There’s an interview with Sidney Crosby. That’s who says “we”25 times. And then I look at an interview with LeBron James in which he actually never says “we”but only “I”.I’m so busted! It’s such a selfish sport nowadays.Take Kyrie Irving, who wanted the switch to become a superstar himself.
SPOX: The same goes for the hysteria surrounding Westbrook’s triple doubles and the whole machinery behind them.
Reimer: Exactly. This is no longer about team sports, it’s more about James Harden earning over 200 million dollars. This is more important.I also think that players now decide who wins the title. It takes years of hockey with the salary cap to build something up.When playing basketball, a curry calls a Durant and says:”You, it’s cool here, come on” and he answers:”Good idea, I’ll come to you!” That has disturbed me over the last few years. And…
SPOX: Please.
Reimer:… think about how difficult it is in baseball to get into the playoffs. In the NBA, on the other hand, teams that are below. 500 – you lose more games than you win and get into the playoffs! That’s not supposed to be.But nothing against the sport itself.I think the sport is absolutely super.March Madness I find brutal and watch every game.In the NBA, however, the preliminary round is splashing about. In the playoffs it doesn’t get any better, there is one sweep after another.
SPOX: The NHL playoffs seem to be much more exciting than the NBA playoffs.
Reimer: In the NHL, the eighth player often beats the first. It never happens in the NBA.You can actually bet that these are four games and off you go.
SPOX: It’s also very difficult to defend his title in the NHL.I can’t think of a Stanley Cup winner in the last few years who didn’t depend much on the role-players.
Reimer: All you have to do is see who scores the goals in the important games. This is always a third or fourth line player. And in the NBA there are two superstars and the others work for them.Nowadays there are the super teams and not much else.Last year, I would have bet everything I have that the Cavaliers and Warriors would reach the final. And I wouldn’t have been alone with that bet.
SPOX: Let’s talk about your core sport – ice hockey. In the summer they changed to the ERC Ingolstadt.Have you settled in there yet?
Reimer: Yes, yes. We’ve been together for a few weeks now and we’ve played several preparatory games. This always happens relatively quickly.Ice hockey is a relatively small group, so you already know each other before. You played with someone the other one knows.Getting to know each other is pretty quick.
SPOX: In the early season you failed with the Nuremberg Ice Tigers in the preliminary round. How do you assess your chances with your new team?
Reimer: I think we have similar potential to the Ice Tigers last year, so we’ll make it to the semi-finals.But we also have a long season, so of course a lot can happen.I believe that the big goal is to qualify for the playoffs. After that, in hockey, everyone can beat anyone.Especially in the playoffs, the daily form is very important. But first we have to qualify for the playoffs.
SPOX: Directly asked: Are the cops from Munich to stop?
Reimer: (laughs) It’s going to be difficult. They won the title two years in a row with great ease.In the new season they hardly exchanged people and rather strengthened themselves even more.In the preparation the EHC showed a good early form and sent the Swiss champion SC Bern home with 7:2.The cops will be back on the road.
