Handball: ARD and ZDF in the race for World Cup TV rights 2019 and 2021

ARD and ZDF can once again hope to broadcast World Handball Championships on free TV.The IHF has announced the rights for the 2019 tournaments in Denmark and Germany and 2021 in Egypt on the open market.”The deadline for submitting bids is 30 September 2010.September”, the IHF informed Sport Bild.

In 2015 and 2017, the rights holder beIN Sports from Qatar had blocked itself from a free-TV transmission because the public broadcasters are freely available via satellite in countries to which pay-TV rights had been sold.Therefore, the World Cup 2015 was only shown online at Sky and 2017 at Sponsor DKB.

Now, beIN Sports waived its right of preliminary hearing with the IHF.ARD and ZDF are basically interested.ZDF sports boss Thomas Fuhrmann said:”The legal situation at the last World Cup was anything but satisfactory:” The TV stations want to achieve a better result for the German handball fan “.
