Olympia: IOC decides: fines for doping possible

The IOC may impose fines for violations of the rules and regulations due to doping or other manipulations in the future. This was made possible by an amendment to the Olympic Charter adopted by the IOC General Assembly at its session in Lima on Friday.

Individual athletes as well as teams can be punished. The decision is also highly controversial because, in the doping crisis in Russia, it was recently reported that the IOC wanted to leave it with a heavy fine because of the hosts’ doping practices at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Leading national anti-doping organizations, including Germany’s NADA, demanded the exclusion of Russia from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang/South Korea on Thursday and described a fine as too lax.Canadian investigator Richard McLaren had reported that there had been a widespread doping system in Russia and that between 2011 and 2015,1000 Russian athletes had benefited from it.
