Olympic Games: Madrid categorically rules out future applications

Madrid is fed up with Olympia. After three unsuccessful applications for the Summer Games in succession, the Spanish capital has categorically ruled out another attempt.

“Madrid will never again compete for the Olympic Games,”said city spokeswoman Rita Maestre at a press conference. They had invested a total of eight billion euros in the three Olympic candidacies, which contributed to the city’s immense debt, Maestre said:”This is no longer the way we are going to go.

The city reacted very clearly to a remark by Alejandro Blanco, President of the National Olympic Committee, saying:”If there is any economic stability in Madrid, you should apply for the Games again,”Blanco said.

Madrid had suffered bitter defeats against London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo in its bid for the 2012,2016 and 2020 games.
