Cycling: Italian judiciary closes investigation into Pantani’s death

The investigation into the death of Marco Pantani has been closed once and for all, following the rejection of an appeal by the parents of the former cycling star.Pantani’s family had sued the judicial authorities of Rimini’s decision to close the investigation in 2016, and the Italian Supreme Court has now dismissed it.

There were no conditions for continuing the investigation and no evidence that Pantani had been murdered with an overdose of cocaine.

According to the Italian media, the public prosecutor’s office considers it proven that Pantani died from a fatal cocktail of antidepressants and not from an overdose of cocaine. The former Tour- and Giro overall winner was on 14.

Pantani’s parents had repeatedly talked about murder in connection with the tragic death and had obtained a resumption of the investigations in 2014.
