NFL:”Be Better Than Me” – Cam apologizes

It’s been 24 disastrous hours for Cam Newton. The quarterback of the Carolina Panthers made a disparaging statement about female reporters during its press conference on Wednesday and received the expected receipt. Now he apologized in public.

After Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer asked Newton for a specific route combination, Carolina’s quarterback grinned at the press conference and replied,”It’s funny when women talk about routes.”

The expected shitstorm in the social media followed, Newton lost one of his big sponsors with yoghurt producer Dannon and also head coach Ron Rivera criticized him publicly.Nevertheless, it took over 24 hours before Newton finally announced an apology.

“After thinking about it carefully, I understand that my choice of words was extremely disrespectful to women.I didn’t mean to.If you’re someone who’s offended by this, I’d like to apologize seriously.I’m a man trying to be a positive role model in my community and I’m trying to use my platform to inspire others,”Newton said in a video message.

He also considers his own behaviour to be “unacceptable.I have two beautiful daughters of my own, and I try to teach them that they can do and be anything they want. The fact that I have already lost a lot of sponsors and fans during this incident has made it clear to me that I am the one being laughed at.I’ve learned a valuable lesson.”

He hopes that “the young people who see this will also learn something from it.Don’t be like me.Be better than me.And I would like to apologize sincerely to the reporters, journalists, great mothers, daughters, sisters and women all over the world and I hope you will forgive me.”
