NBA: Media: 148 million!

Joel Embiid has extended his contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to media reports. The center has therefore approved a five-year extension, which is expected to yield a total of 148 million dollars from 2018.

This is reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.Further bonuses are planned to be built, so that the volume can increase to up to 178 million dollars if Embiid is elected into an all-NBA team or appointed to the MVP.This would allow the Cameroonian to reach the so-called super-max for rookie extensions, i. e. 30 percent of the team’s salary cap.

Due to the long history of injuries, an extremely complicated contract was negotiated.According to Woj, the Sixers would have to fire Embiid in order to avoid the full 148 million.

Coach Brett Brown did not want to comment on the possible extension, but expressly praised Embiid:”He does things in the field that remind me of someone who listens to music and can play the song straight away.He studies Tim Duncan or Kevin Durant and suddenly he can play like her. He’s just very unique.”

At the same time, according to Woj, there will be safeguard clauses for the Sixers if Embiid is injured again for a long time.Accordingly, a portion of the salary would not be counted against the salary cap. However, it is still unknown in which dimension this would happen.

In 2018/19, when the extension comes into force, Embiid will earn $25.3 million, making it the top paid center in the league after Hassan Whiteside and Andre Drummond.

Embiid was pulled by the Sixers in 2014 at number three in the draft. The Cameroonian had to suspend the first two seasons due to injury.Embiid finally made his debut last season, but only played 31 games. But he managed to convince with 10.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in only 25.4 minutes on average.
