MLB: World Series: Family of Jackie Robinson throws first pitch

The Los Angeles Dodgers opened the World Series not only with a victory, but also with a special gesture: The family of baseball legend Jackie Robinson threw the ceremonial first pitch before game 1 against the Houston Astros.

Robinson’s children, Sharon and David Robinson, stood in front of Mound throwing pitches towards Home Plate, while Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s 95-year-old widow, threw a slightly shorter ball.

Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in the MLB 70 years ago, breaking the so-called color barrier. In honour of him, his number 42, which he had worn for the Brooklyn Dodgers, has not been awarded in the MLB for 20 years.

Meanwhile Champ Pederson, the brother of Outfielder Joc Pederson, was allowed to proclaim the famous phrase “It’s Time for Dodger Baseball”. The set became famous for the legendary Dodgers commentator Vin Scully, who had finished his career last season.
