Ice Hockey: Champions League: Munich on course for quarter-finals

Red Bull Munich is on the verge of making it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time. Coach Don Jackson’s team won the first leg of the last 16 at the Swiss champions SC Bern 3-2 (0-1,2-1,1-0). Liga rival Adler Mannheim, on the other hand, was defeated by Swedish runner-up Brynäs IF in their own hall 2:3 (0:1,1:2,1:0).

Never before has a German team reached the quarter-finals of the royal class. The second leg will take place on 7 March. The team with the better overall result from both games will reach the next round. Runner-up Grizzly’s Wolfsburg had already failed in the group stage.

Maximilian Kastner scored the acclaimed victory goal for Munich shortly before the end (59th). Keith Aucoin (22nd) and Andreas Eder (24th) had previously met for RB, Andrew Ebbett (14th) and Justin Krueger (27th) had been successful for Bern.

In Mannheim, international player Matthias Plachta (35th/58th) let the eagle fans with his goals still have a little hope. Daniel Paille (15th), Adam Hirsch (30th) and Jesper Jensen (36th) were successful for the guests.
