German cycling mourns the loss of Bernhard Eckstein. The world amateur road champion of 1960 died last week at the age of 82 after a long and serious illness in the circle of his family. This was announced by BDR on Monday.

Eckstein was one of the most famous amateur cyclists of the former GDR in the 1950s and 1960s.

In his greatest triumph, the World Cup victory at the legendary Sachsenring, he benefited from the tactical trick of his much more successful team mate Täve Schur.

When Eckstein broke away, the only remaining rival, Willy van den Berghen from Belgium, stayed with Schur, but he did not carry out any pursuit work. This cleared the way for Eckstein.
