The German series champion Brose Bamberg has once again scored points in the EuropaLeague after an impressive race to catch up.
Four days after losing 68-77 in the league to the leaders Bayern Munich, Andrea Trinchieri’s team turned the match against Spanish champions Valencia Basket into an 83-82 (41-47) win in the crazy final phase.
In the previous EuroLeague home game against FC Barcelona Lassa, the upper Franconians had caught up a gap of 26 points.
Three minutes before the end, the hosts had come back with 69:81. Match winner in front of 6150 enthusiastic spectators was Ricky Hickman, who made the turnaround perfect with two converted free-throwers two seconds to go.
But Bamberg’s fifth win in the ninth game still leaves Bamberg behind play-off places ninth. Valencia, team of ex-Bambergers Tibor Pleiß, dropped to 14th place after their fifth consecutive defeat. Stand back.
Although Bamberg had started the game as the favourite, the hosts only managed to take the lead at the beginning. But by the end of the first quarter, the guests had already taken over the helm.
From then on, the team around former NBA pro Dorrell Wright was trailing behind before the sensation came to a close.
Bamberg won the last quarter with 31:16. Best thrower was Ricky Hickman with 26 points. Pleiß came up to seven points.
