NFL: McAdoo layoff in the season? No guarantee.

The New York Giants are currently in high spirits: the surprising dismantling of Eli Manning has hit the headlines, while at the same time the job of Head Coach Ben McAdoo has been in the balance for weeks. This was confirmed by the team owner.

When asked if McAdoo’s job was safe for the rest of the season, team owner John Mara said on Wednesday:”There are no guarantees in life,” and added that the team “of course has to make some decisions in the off-season. We’re at 2-9, okay? It’s a disgrace. Nobody does a good job.”

Mara also gave insight into the controversial decision to place Manning on the bench for Geno Smith and Rookie Davis Webb. He had already talked to managing director Jerry Reese a week or two ago about giving the other two quarterbacks snaps.

According to Mara, the original plan was actually to let Manning start first and then gradually give Smith and Webb more deployment time – something that Manning refused to do:”On Tuesday morning Jerry called me and told me that Eli Ben informed him that he could let Geno start directly if he wanted to bring him to the second half anyway. He felt that was not fair to himself and Geno. He also wanted us to release the statement, so we did.”

Looking back, Mara showed understanding for Manning’s desire not to go into games with the knowledge that he will not end it. When asked by a reporter whether the situation could not have been solved better, Mara admitted:”Probably there is a better way. But tell me which one it is.”
