Mehrsport: Heart attack with 56: Olympic champion Schmidtke died

German cycling mourns the loss of Olympic champion Fredy Schmidtke. The railway specialist, who won gold in the 1,000 m time trial at the 1984 Summer Games in 1984, died on Friday at the age of 56 from a heart attack. This was announced by BDR.

Schmidtke, who was born in Cologne-Worringen, had already become world champion on the train-kilometre in 1982.

After his L. A. Gold Race. the self-proclaimed “bon vivant” lost his form, had to fight with overweight.

In 1986, Schmidtke ended his career at the age of only 25 years old. He leaves his wife and two daughters.
