Cycling: Rail World Cup: Vogel sprints for seventh victory of the season

The two-time track cycling Olympic champion Kristina Vogel remains the benchmark in the World Cup. In Milton, Canada, the 27-year-old from Erfurt celebrated her seventh victory of the season. In the sprint, Vogel prevailed over the Dutch rider Shanne Braxpennincx, his compatriot Laurine van Riessen came in third.

Miriam Welte from Kaiserslautern came in seventh.

On Sunday, Vogel in the team sprint together with Welte and Keirin has the chance of further World Cup victories. She had already won the triple this season in Pruszkow and Manchester, Poland.

In the men’s keirin, Joachim Eilers (Chemnitz) took third place behind the British Lewis Olivia in the victory of the Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen. The world champion of 2016, who came from Cologne, dedicated his medal to Fredy Schmidtke. The Olympic champion of 1984 in the 1000 m time trial had died on Saturday at the age of only 56 years after a heart attack in Cologne.
