Handball: Olympic Champion Russia and Czech Republic in quarter-finals

Olympic champion Russia trembled into the quarter-finals at the Women’s Handball World Championships. The favourites in Magdeburg won against Asian champions South Korea only after extra time with 36:35. In the middle of the second half, the Russians were still in the lead with five goals.

The Czech Republic also entered the round of the last eight teams surprisingly. The Czechoslovakia defeated the third place at the World Cup Romania 28:27 (14:17) and were now even five goals behind.

The German team was eliminated in the last 16 on Sunday by a 17:21 defeat of Denmark. In the second group game, the DHB team had defeated South Korea 23:18.
