NFL: New Managing Director: Giants get Dave Gettleman

The New York Giants have filled at least one of their vacancies with an old confidant: The Giants are recruiting Dave Gettleman as managing director to replace the recently dismissed Jerry Reese.

In a statement, team president John Mara and CEO Steve Tisch said:”When you consider where we stand as a team, I think it was important to get someone with experience as a managing director.

Gettleman’s experience is second to none, he has done a fantastic job in Carolina and played a major role in our success during his time here. He will bring his own approach to drafting players and engaging them in the Free Agency.”

Gettleman looks back on four years as Managing Director in Carolina, including the Super Bowl participation in 2015. He was in New York from 1998 to 2012, where he held a senior executive role. Under Gettleman, the Panthers won NFC South three times in a row, and his dismissal in July was all the more surprising. Presumably, disagreements with Carolina’s team owners over how to deal with deserving players were the main reason for the separation.

In New York, Gettleman is now expecting a Herculean task:”Defensive, there are some building blocks, but offensively, there are many question marks. The Run Game has been a building site for years, Eli Manning’s future is in the stars, and Manning’s succession has to be tackled now. Odell Beckham’s new contract, which runs into its last year of contract in 2018, is also high on the list of priorities – but first and foremost, the search for a new head coach is on the agenda.
