Series champion Brose Bamberg has lost the pursuit duel in the German Basketball Bundesliga and has dropped back to fifth place. The defending champion was defeated on Tuesday at medi Bayreuth 75:85 (36:38). By contrast, the MHP giants Ludwigsburg maintained their place at the top of the standings with a 87:79 (53:40) victory at EWE Baskets Oldenburg.
Bayreuth moved up to fourth place in the standings with their first Derby victory against Bamberg in February 1998 and overtook the champions with 22:10 points (20:12).
Bayreuth also has reason to be pleased in view of Captain Bastian Doreth’s extension of the contract. The 28-year-old extended his contract by three years until the 2020/21 season. This was announced by the third in the standings after the end of the game.
Ludwigsburg (24:6) is the new runner-up ahead of Alba Berlin (24:8) after his victory at the runner-up in EWE Baskets Oldenburg. The sovereign leader is Bayern Munich (30:2).
On the Bayreuth side, the American Gabe York convinced as the best thrower of the game with 23 points. In Oldenburg, the guests from Ludwigsburg took the lead shortly before the end of the first quarter and did not give it up until the final siren. Thomas Walkup (USA) led Ludwigsburg to victory with 22 points.
