Handball: Gensheimer about to renew contract with PSG

National team captain Uwe Gensheimer will presumably run for French champion Paris Saint-Germain after 2019.

“There’s a signal that the club wants to extend with me. When the European Championship tournament is over, we’ll talk,”said the left-winger in an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten (Wednesday edition).

The 31-year-old, who switched from the Rhine-Neckar Lions to the star ensemble from the French capital in 2016, feels more respected in the Hexagon than at home.

“You are perceived differently in France as an athlete, all doors are open to you,”said Gensheimer and explained:”This envy factor is not there in France. In Germany, as an athlete, you are often labeled as someone who has learned nothing.”

The project title defence at the European Championship in Croatia (12. till 28. January) the man from Mannheim is approaching with cautious optimism:”We are among the favourites and we want to reach the semi-finals at least. But the power density at the top of the world is so tight, that’s where luck comes in.”
