Showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium: In the night of Tuesday night, Atlanta hosts the grand finale of this year’s college football season. The National Championship Game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide even takes on historic traits: while the Bulldogs have been waiting for a national title for almost 40 years, the clash between Georgia and Alabama is only the second duel between two college teams from the same conference in the history of the National Championship Game.
Both the Bulldogs and Alabama are starting in the SEC, losing only one game each in the regular season. Both were defeated by arch-rivals from Auburn. Alabama lost 26:14 in the Iron Bowl at the end of November, but Georgia lost their only defeat of the season in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, but took revenge in the final game of the regular season and defeated the Tigers 28:7.
With a strong regular season, the Georgia Bulldogs qualified for this year’s Rose Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 Conference, who also only lost one game in the regular season. The Rose Bowl between the Bulldogs and the Sooners became an epic overtime thriller at the end of which Georgia won 54:48 after a 17-point gap.
Running Back Sony Michel became the hero of the game from the Bulldogs’ point of view by running four touchdowns and scoring the decisive touchdown with a 27-yards run. Shortly before, Oklahoma had a field goal attempt from 27 yards, which could have decided the game in favor of the Sooners, but the kick was blocked by linebacker Lorenzo Carter.
