The Golden State Warriors are likely to be at least one contender over the next few years – but they still have plans for the future. According to media reports, they may be interested in a commitment from Anthony Davis.
This is reported by Insider Tim Kawakami of The Athletic. This is not about the near future, but about a period of time that is still a good two and a half years away – around the summer of 2020.
Then some contracts in the roster of the Warriors expire and role-players like David West, Shaun Livingston or Andre Iguodala would be at an advanced age. And since you don’t bake any sandwiches in the Bay Area, you could – according to Kawakami – start an attempt at AD, which of course would have to forego salary.
Davis’ contract with the New Orleans Pelicans runs until 2021, but he can opt out of his contract in 2020 thanks to a player option. This would make him an Unrestricted Free, which would allow the Warriors to make their offer.
Davis is now in his sixth season, but the franchise has only made it into the playoffs once. If the prospect of success does not change, AD could sooner or later consider a change.
