NFL: Trainer Search Completed: Bears engage Matt Nagy

The trainer carousel gets moving! The Chicago Bears hire Matt Nagy as their new head coach. After Oakland, the second vacant head-coaching chair is now occupied.

The Chicago Sun-Times and NFL network insiders Ian Rapoport, among others, reported this, and shortly afterwards the team confirmed their commitment. Nagy had worked for the past two years as an offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs under Andy Reid. From 2013 to 2015 he was the quarterback coach of the Chiefs.

The commitment is therefore the expected step in Chicago: The Bears urgently needed offensive creativity in their new coaching staff to support the development of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Nagy, who continued to draw attention to himself with his play-calling responsibilities at the Chiefs this season, is likely to bring that with him.

After some extremely conservative approaches under John Fox, more college aspects should now be introduced – for example in the form of run pass options and spread elements. It will also be exciting to see how the Bears, who are now likely to invest in their receiving corps in the next step, will use Tarik Cohen, for example.

According to Rapoport, stability is to be maintained on the defensive side of the ball:”According to this, the plan in Windy City is to keep Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio under the new regime. This reduces the list of teams looking for coaches to the Giants, Cardinals, Colts and Lions.
