Ski Alpin: Tumor disease: Elena Fanchini misses the Olympic Games

The Italian ski racer Elena Fanchini misses the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang/South Korea due to a tumor disease. This was announced by Italy’s FISI ski association on Friday. For the 32-year-old, it would have been the fourth consecutive Olympic participation. According to FISI, the tumor is curable.

“Everyone is going through difficult times. Then when life puts us to the test,”wrote Fanchini on Facebook:”It’s not easy when I think of all the sacrifices, the effort, the seasonal goals, Olympia and my dreams.”

Fanchini, who won silver medal in the 2005 World Championship in downhill, will be back on the piste next year. The speed specialist celebrated two World Cup victories in her career – both in downhill skiing.

“You never know what’s gonna happen. But I will not give up, I will take up this new challenge with strength and courage to come back more strongly”, Fanchini announced.
