Ski Alpin: Italian triple victory, Veith best Austrian skier

The Italian ski ladies celebrated a triple victory on Sunday. Sofia Goggia won the downhill run in Bad Kleinkirchheim on a shortened track ahead of Federica Brignone and Nadia Fanchini, the trio thus provided a novelty in World Cup history. For Goggia it is the third World Cup victory. Anna Veith was eighth best Austrian before Stephanie Venier.

The result awakened memories of the 1970s among long-standing observers of the World Cup. At that time the Italian men set the tone and delivered similar results, in 1974 there was a five-time victory in the giant slalom of Berchtesgaden. Journalists coined the term “valanga azzurra” (blue avalanche) for the Italian team.
