For the New Orleans Saints, the season ended with the incredible game against the Minnesota Vikings – promptly drew attention to Drew Brees: The Saints quarterback contract is over, but the 39-year-old doesn’t want to go anywhere.
“I’m not in the mood to make it a big secret,”ESPN Brees quoted on Tuesday with a view to his contractual situation,”I have the same opinion as two days ago, and that’s basically the same opinion as twelve years ago: I want to stay here as long as they want me to stay”.
So now there are exciting contract negotiations ahead: Brees’ contract expires and the Saints can’t give him a franchise day – but there is a clause in the 39-year-old’s contract. If no agreement is reached by mid-March, Brees would become a free agent with the start of the new league year.
The fact that Brees can still play at the highest level was impressively demonstrated in the second half against the Vikings. New Orleans has aggressively shown much young talent, a very good offensive line and defensive clear progress. It’s hard to imagine Brees leaving Saints and Head Coach Sean Payton.
At the same time, a new contract is not going to be easy financially either: Brees is already charging Saints 2018’s salary cap with 18 million dollars – if he doesn’t play there. A new deal would therefore spread further funds over the next few years.
