Alpine Skiing: Downhill in Cortina: Goggia conquers Vonn – Weidle convinces

Sofia Goggia has registered for her second downhill victory in the World Cup within six days in the circle of Olympic favourites. The 25-year-old Italian defeated Speed Queen Lindsey Vonn (0.47 seconds back) in Cortina d’ Ampezzo and clinched her fourth World Cup victory. Third place went to Mikaela Shiffrin (USA/+0.84).

Already qualified for the Olympics, Kira Weidle (+1.47) convinced with her second-best World Cup result as ninth,”I can be very satisfied with the result,”she said on ARD. Michaela Wenig retired in the middle section.

Olympic champion Julia Mancuso (USA) contested her 399th victory in Cortina. and last World Cup race in Wonder Woman costume with cape. Her career is over because of persistent hip problems.

Vonn was initially on course 79 at the traditional “Olympia delle Tofane”. World Cup victory, but with a wave in the middle section and almost prevented a fall. At the finish she let go of a cry of frustration.

“I was very angry, that would have been a victory,”Vonn said and laughed,”unfortunately this was not a perfect run. Thank God I’m not hurt. But with my shape, I’m happy and I know I can drive much faster.”

Goggia struck her hands over her head at the finish line when Vonn and her boyfriend had failed and cursed her. She herself had previously convinced with her typical wild driving style and clever choice of lines. “That’s super cool,”she said about her victory,”but if Lindsey doesn’t make the mistake, she wins.”

Viktoria Rebensburg is missing at the races in the Dolomites after her viral illness, as last in Bad Kleinkirchheim. On Thursday she travelled to Cortina to prepare for the giant slalom in nearby Dobbiaco on Tuesday at the Plan de Corones.
