NFL: Steelers: Fichtner replaces Haley as offensive coordinator

The Pittsburgh Steelers quickly installed a replacement for the recently dismissed Todd Haley. Randy Fichtner will assume the role of former offensive coordinator. Fichtner was most recently employed by the Steelers as a quarterback coach. The decision was announced by the franchise on Thursday.

Fichtner has been working with the Steelers for 11 years under head coach Mike Tomlin. From 2007-2009 as Wide Receivers Coach and the last 8 years as Quarterbacks Coach. During this period, Ben Roethlisberger threw 31,763 yards and 202 touchdowns. The new coordinator is said to have a very good relationship with Big Ben.

“I would like to thank Coach Tomlin and Art Rooney II for this opportunity,”said Fichtner,”We have a great squad and I will be responsible from now on for putting our players in the best possible position, being successful and scoring points. I am very happy about the challenge to lead this offense. Our preparations for the new season have already begun.”

The Steelers had fired Haley on Wednesday after he was in charge for six years. In addition to his new role, Fichtner will remain a quarterback coach. In addition, offensive line coach Mike Munchak will not be lost to the Arizona Cardinals. The only open coaching position at the Steelers is thus the Wide Receivers Coach.
