Ski flying: WM: Friday brings bronze, Tande world champion

Ski jumper Richard Freitag won the bronze medal at the World Championship in Oberstdorf, which was cancelled after the third round due to strong winds. A good two weeks after his heavy fall at the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck, Friday only the Norwegian Daniel Andre Tande and tour winner Kamil Stoch had to admit defeat.

The 26-year-old Friday, who landed on the podium for the first time in an individual competition at a major championship, was second after two rounds.

With a strong tailwind, however, he showed his weakest flight and with his 190.5 m behind Stoch, who flew 211.5 m in difficult conditions, he fell behind Stoch.

Tande, who landed in the third round at 200.0 m, won with 651.9 in front of Stoch (638.6). It is the Norwegian’s first major individual title, and in 2016 he had already won the World Championship gold medal in ski flying with Norway’s team. Freitag (627.6) had 19.2 points and thus a 16-metre lead over the third-placed world record holder Stefan Kraft.

After a strong 213.0 m Andreas Wellinger moved up to seventh place (599.7), the German record holder Markus Eisenbichler with 203.0 m to eleventh place (560.1). Stephan Leyhe (183,5) fell with 184,5 m to the 20th place. Rank (502.9).

At the end of the World Championships in Allgäu, the team competition will be held on Sunday (16.00 hrs in the LIVETICKER). The title defender is Norway, the DSV-Adler took second place two years ago at the Kulm in Bad Mitterndorf/Austria.
