Cycling: Toud Down Under: Second stage success for Greipel

Andre Greipel celebrated his second stage win at the end of the Tour Down Under in Australia. The sprinter from the Lotto-Soudal team won the sprint around Adelaide in front of local hero Caleb Ewan on the sixth leg, covering 90 km. The South African Daryl Impey secured the overall victory after six stages.

Behind world champion Peter Sagan (Slovakia) from the German Bora-hansgrohe team, Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) from Bocholt finished fourth.

Greipel was delighted with the success, but criticized the high temperatures in Australia, sometimes above 40 degrees Celsius in the shade,”I’ve never ridden a bike in these climatic conditions. But I know for sure that this race won’t make me any better,”said the 35-year-old on ARD radio.

He finds it “simply sad that it is not possible to reach a common denominator with the Drivers’ Union, the UCI and the organiser in order to achieve the best for the driver and the event. What happened was certainly not the best thing for the drivers.”

South Africa’s Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) secured the overall victory ahead of Australian Richie Porte. Greipel, who had already won the first stage, finished the tour on stage 96. Rank. Best German in the final classification was Nikias Arndt (Buchholz/Sunweb) on the 56th place. Place with over 13 minutes gap to Impey.
