Ski Jumping: Ski Flying World Championships: Friday missed with German team medal

The German ski jumpers around Richard Freitag missed a medal in the team competition at the Flight World Championships in Oberstdorf. One day after his third place in the singles on Friday, he had to settle for fourth place together with Andreas Wellinger, Markus Eisenbichler and Stephan Leyhe.

Norway triumphed over Slovenia and Poland. Two years ago, Germany won silver with the currently injured Severin friend.

“The disappointment is extremely great. If everyone had jumped half a metre more, it would have been a good idea,”said Wellinger on ARD. Eisenbichler said:”We were just bad as a team, but the world is not going to end. We have another highlight at the Olympics.”

After eight jumps, the German quartet reached 1581.2 points with the strong Friday, which jumped at a slower start as the best of the DSV quartet 221.5 and 216.5, Andreas Wellinger (Ruhpolding/226.0+212.0), Markus Eisenbichler (Siegsdorf (200.0+210.5) and Stephan Leyhe (Willingen/200.0+186.5).

Norway with individual world champion Daniel Andre Tande won with 1,662.2 points, ahead of Slovenia (1615.8) and the Polish team around the individual runner-up Kamil Stoch (1592.1).

This is how a German negative series came to an end: Since the Olympic Games in 2002, German jumpers have not won a medal in the individual and in the team at a major championship. Sixteen years ago, Salt Lake City had won silver for Sven Hannawald (normal hill) and gold for the DSV team.

Tande, who had won the individual competition, which had been cancelled after three rounds due to strong winds 24 hours before, became the triumphant winner of the title fights in the Allgäu.

Tande is the third ski jumper after his compatriot Roar Ljökelsöy (2004 and 2006), meanwhile in the coaching staff of the German team, and the Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer (2008), who won the double.
