Olympia 2018: cross-country skier Kruger wins gold in the Skiathlon

The Norwegian cross-country skier Simen Hegstad Krüger has duped the favourites and surprisingly won the gold medal in the 15 km ski athlon in classic and free style at the winter games in Pyeongchang.

The 24-year-old set off four kilometres before the end with an energetic intermediate spurt and won his Olympic debut eight seconds ahead of Martin Johnsrud Sundby. Hans Christer Holund finished third with a 9.9-second gap, making Norway’s triple victory perfect.

Best of a German quartet was Thomas Bing (Dermbach) 43.7 seconds back to eleventh place. Lucas Bögl Gaißach) became 16th (+59.9), Johannes Dobler (Traunstein) 22nd (+1:36.6). Andreas Katz (Baiersbronn) landed on position 35 (+3:29.2).
