Olympia 2018: Three victories at the beginning 46 years ago

Laura Dahlmeier, Andreas Wellinger and Arnd Peiffer gave the German team a historic gold rush with their Olympic victories in Pyeongchang.

Three gold medals on the first two days of the competition were awarded to a German Olympic team 46 years ago, in 1972 in Sapporo.

There, the speed skater Erhard Keller over 500 m, Ulrich Wehling in the Nordic combined and Wolfgang Zimmerer in the two-man bob with brakeman Peter Utzschneider won the first gold medals.

The dimensions of the Winter Games 46 years ago were much smaller. In Sapporo there were only 35 medal decisions in six sports, and on the first two days of the competition only five Olympic champions were selected. In Pyeongchang there are twelve decisions on the first weekend and a total of 102 in 15 sports.
