Olympia 2018: Wild fall: Matthias Mayer crashes into piste workers

Marcel Hirscher’s gold medal at the Olympic combination was overshadowed by Matthias Mayer’s heavy fall. The downhill Olympic champion fell during his slalom run and crashed in a piste worker standing at the edge of the track.

But Mayer not only took the marshal with him when he fell, but also a drill bit stuck in the snow, which is used for attaching the goalkeepers. The severity of the crash is shown by the fact that the Austrian broke the implement apart in the crash.

In an initial diagnosis, the ÖSV can give a cautious all-clear, nothing should be broken. However, the Carinthian suffered a painful bruise on the hip and is currently being treated by physiotherapist Mario Schlattinger. At the moment it is not possible to say whether participation in the Olympic downhill on Thursday is in danger.
