Olympics 2018: Short-tracker Fontana wins gold in sprint race

Shorttracker Arianna Fontana has won Italy in the 23. Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang won the first gold medal. The third place in the World Rankings was won in the 500 m final in 42.569 seconds ahead of Yara van Kerhof (Netherlands) and Kim Boutin (Canada). For Fontana it’s already the sixth Olympic medal, but it’s her first gold medal.

South Korean Choi Min Jeong, narrowly beaten by Fontana, was disqualified after the sprint race. The 19-year-old broke the Olympic record in the semi-final in 42.422 seconds.

Anna Seidel was eliminated in the quarter-finals. The Dresden rider finished fourth and last in her run. Seidel’s club colleague Bianca Walter had already failed last weekend in the preliminary heat.
