Austria’s toboggan elite has struck again at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. After David Gleirscher’s one-seater gold medal, Fischler won silver at the Alpensia Sliding Centre on Wednesday. After two runs, the two Tyroleans only missed 0.088 seconds to the winners Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt. The Germans thus repeated their Olympic victory in Sochi in 2014.
For the German world champion Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken, only third place (+0.290) was left, immediately followed by the second Austrian sled with the U23 world champions Thomas Steu and Lorenz Koller. The two Olympic debutants who made a strong appearance missed 0.297 seconds to third place. It is the 21st Austrian luge medal in Olympic history, the eighth in silver. The red-white-red sledders won two medals in Vancouver eight years ago with gold and silver.
The ÖOC team will hold four medals in front of the final team competition in this sport on Thursday. In addition to gold by Gleirscher, there had also been a victory of the Salzburg ski superstar Marcel Hirscher in the Alpine combination and earlier on Wednesday there was a bronze medal by the Styrian Lukas Klapfer in the individual competition of the Nordic combination from the normal hill.
