Olympia 2018: Shiffrin wins gold, ÖSV ladies in no-man’s-land

US ski star Mikaela Shiffrin won gold in the first Olympic race in South Korea. The 22-year-old won the giant slalom in Yongpyong on Thursday, ahead of the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (+0.39 sec.) and Federica Brignone from Italy (0.46). For Shiffrin it is the second gold medal after that in her showpiece slalom four years ago in Sochi.

Austria’s quartet had nothing to do with the battle for precious metal. Anna Veith (2.08), from Salzburg, was ranked 12th as the best lady from ÖSV. The Tyrolean Stephanie Brunner, who was ninth after the first round, risked everything in the decision and retired. Ricarda Haaser turned 17th, Bernadette shield only 24.
