According to a media report, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with Infielder Eduardo Nunez for a one-year contract. Only a medical check separates both sides from a conclusion – but this is not a formality.
As Buster Olney of ESPN reported on Thursday, Nunez would receive a 2018 contract with an option for 2019. However, the versatile infielder still has to go to the medical check-up after finishing last season with a persistent knee injury.
His last appearance for Boston was in game 1 of the ALDS against Houston Astros. After his first at-bat, he had to be carried away from the field in great pain. He had previously missed large parts of September with a compression of the posterior cruciate ligament.
Nunez did not need surgery, but in mid-December he was still involved in rehabilitation. However, this had not prevented Boston from expressing interest in him and remained in contact with his agents from the agency ISE Baseball.
The 30-year-old came to the Red Sox last season via trade from the San Francisco Giants and immediately performed well. He beat. 321/. 353/. 539 for the Red Sox with eight homeruns in 165 at-bats.
If he is fit, Nunez is expected to replace Dustin Pedroia, who will most likely miss the start of the season due to knee surgery. Afterwards, Nunez is likely to act as a utility infielder and provide the established core forces with occasional breaks.
However, a commitment by Nunez will probably not be the efforts of Red Sox for Outfielder J. D. Martinez. The ex-player of the Arizona Diamondbacks continues to be considered the top candidate of the Sox, although it was still not possible to reach an agreement. Rumour has it that Martinez is rumored to be too low on the spread over five years and up to $125 million.
