Olympia 2018: Pechstein only eighth on her parade track – Visser wins gold

Germany’s most successful winter Olympic athlete Claudia Pechstein missed her tenth Olympic medal at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

The 45-year-old rider only finished eighth in the gangneung oval of the speed skaters on her parade course over 5000 m in 7:05.43 minutes. The Dutch Esmee Visser (6:50,23) won the gold medal ahead of Czech world record holder Martina Sablikova (6:51,85) and Natalia Woronina (Olympic athlete from Russia/6:53,98).

Pechstein, who finished ninth 3000m on Saturday over her side track, is still in her seventh games with five gold, two silver and two bronze medals. For the Netherlands it was already the sixth gold medal in the seventh competition. After Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Sablikova missed the hat-trick over the long distance that Pechstein had managed between 1994 and 2002.
