Olympia 2018: Skeleton: Gold for South Korean Yun – Jungk becomes seventh

Local hero Yun Sung Bin (South Korea) won gold in the skeleton at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. On his home track, the overall World Cup winner triumphed 1.63 seconds ahead of Nikita Tregubow (Olympic athletes from Russia) and Dominic Parsons (Great Britain/+1.65).

Axel Jungk (Oberbärenburg) went out empty-handed. The vice world champion had to settle for seventh place after four runs. Directly behind Christopher Grotheer (Oberhof) and Alexander Gassner (Winterberg) finished eighth and ninth.

“There was a little bit of the worm in it during practice. We made a few mistakes, we have to learn from them and do better next time. We can’t be satisfied with that,”said Jungk, who wants to continue until the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing,”if his back is with us.”

National coach Jens Müller was also not satisfied:”We knew that it would be difficult to compete for the medals. But we had expected a little bit more,”he told ZDF.

Record world champion Martins Dukurs went out empty-handed in fourth place. The Latvian driver is the best pilot of the past ten years, but in 2014 he was beaten by local hero Alexander Tretyakov, who is now one of the suspects in the Russian state doping scandal over the winter games in Sochi.

2010 in Vancouver, Canada’s Jon Montgomery won his home game, just ahead of Dukurs. The five-time world champion, eight times overall World Cup winner and nine times European champion had the bad luck that the last three winter games took place on newly built ice rinks where the local heroes had great advantages.
