Olympics 2018: Canadian Girard wins short-track gold over 1000 m

The Canadian short-tracker Samuel Girard benefited from a fall of the favourites at the winter games in Pyeongchang and surprisingly secured an Olympic gold medal over 1000m. Girard, runners-up three times, won ahead of American John-Henry Krueger and South Korean Seo Yira.

Seo, 1000 m and all-around world champion, 1500 m Olympic champion Lim Hyojun and Sandor Liu Shaolin fell down together in the penultimate round, and Girard and Krueger had their way out. The Canadian didn’t miss the chance to win his first gold medal at a major event. Germans were not competing in the competition.
