NHL: League condemns racist insult to Capitals player Smith-Pelly

The NHL has sharply criticized the racist insult to Devante Smith-Pelly. The African-American Washington Capitals striker had been mugged by four male viewers in the game at the Chicago Blackhawks.

“The NHL condemns this unacceptable and reprehensible behaviour. No player, coach, official or fan should have to endure such abuse at any of our games,”said Commissioner Gary Bettmann.

The four men were immediately removed from the arena. The Blackhawks apologized for the incident.
