Olympia 2018: Ski Freestyle: Sharpe takes gold in halfpipe – Cakmakli eighth

Freestyle skier Cassie Sharpe from Canada won gold in the halfpipe at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The world championship runner-up of 2015 and third place in the X-Games came in the final at the Phoenix Snow Park to 95.80 points and won clearly ahead of the French Marie Martinod, World Championship runner-up of 2017 and Olympic runner-up in 2014 (92.60), as well as the American Brita Sigourney (91.60), who is the world cup leader.

Sabrina Cakmakli from Partenkirchen, who was often afflicted with injuries in the past, achieved a respectable eighth place with 74.20 points.

In the last of three rounds she had tried and confessed a new trick, a so-called “flair”, but had fallen shortly afterwards:”There would definitely have been a few more points with the flair, but I can’t do anything more,”she said.

Heli Herdt, the sporting director of the German freestylers, was satisfied with Cakmakli’s result:”Top eight in the world at the Olympic Games, that’s decent,”he said, but added:”There’s more than that, we know that, but you have to bring it down in the competition. Cakmakli, who finished 14th in Sochi in 2014, is determined to continue until the 2022 Games in Beijing.

Surprisingly, the American Devin Logan had not made it to the final. She won bronze at the World Cup last year.
