Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor to US President Donald Trump, will travel to Pyeongchang for the closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games on Sunday.
“Their coming here is a sign of the games’ success and underpins the South Korean-American alliance,”said Noh Kyu Duk, Foreign Ministry spokesman in Seoul to the Yonhap news agency. Trump is expected in Seoul on Friday.
According to Noh, the topic of North Korea could also be discussed. During the Winter Games, the neighbouring countries from North and South Korea, which had been hostile to each other for many years, were shyly approaching each other. However, the US announced that it would continue to exert pressure on North Korea.
Kim Yo Jong Un, sister and close confidante of North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un, had visited the opening ceremony of the Games with North Korea’s protocol leader Kim Yong Nam and had talks with South Korea’s President Moon Jae In. The ceremony was also attended by US Vice President Mike Pence, who avoided a meeting with the North Korean delegation.
