The Canadian ski-crosser Brady Leman won gold at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang after the disappointment of Sochi. The 31-year-old, who was fourth in Russia four years ago, prevailed over Marc Bischofberger of Switzerland in the final, while Sergei Ridsik of the Olympic athletes from Russia (OAR) won bronze.
Ridsik and Kevin Drury (Canada) fell early in the final, Leman only had to defend himself against Bischofberger and stayed ahead until the finish. For Sochi Olympic champion Jean Frederic Chapuis (France) the quarter-finals were over.
The German ski crossers Paul Eckert (Samerberg), Tim Hronek (Unterwössen) and Florian Wilmsmann (Hartpenning) failed prematurely at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. At the start of the knockout rounds, all three missed out on one of the first two places in their respective round of sixteen finals.
Wilmsmann was first in the lead in his run, but then finished fourth and last.
Hronek then came third, as did Eckert. The Swedish world champion Victor Öhling Norberg also dropped out in the last sixteen.
The first knockout round was overshadowed by several heavy falls. The most frightening thing was the Canadian former World Champion Chris del Bosco, who misjudged a jump and crashed onto the runway after a flight of more than 40 metres from high altitude. At first he remained motionless.
Del Bosco (35) was finally transported away with a rescue sledge. The paramedics also had to rescue the Frenchman Terence Tchiknavorian and the Austrian Christoph Wahrstötter. The Frenchman Terence Tchiknavorian has suffered a shin fracture.
