Olympic Games 2018: Goggia wins gold in the downhill, Vonn third place

Ski racer Sofia Goggia won the first women’s downhill gold medal at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. The 25-year-old thus foiled the second Olympic gold medal of ski superstar Lindsey Vonn (USA) in the alpine supreme discipline in Jeongseon, who came 0.09 seconds behind the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel.

Viktoria Rebensburg (Kreuth), Olympic champion 2010 in giant slalom, finished ninth with a gap of 1.42 seconds. Kira Weidle (Starnberg/1.79) finished her first Olympic descent in eleventh place.

“I still can’t say exactly where I’ve lost time, especially in the middle section. I’ve gotten a bit wide of the line, but I have to look at it again,”said Rebensburg at Eurosport:”But I can’t blame myself. I skied well.”

For Goggia, who was unable to participate in Sochi four years ago due to injury, these are the first Olympic Games. She only finished eleventh in the Super-G on Saturday. For Italy, it is also the first female Olympic gold medallist since Daniela Ceccarelli won the Super-G in 2002.
