NFL: Panthers dismiss Running Back Jonathan Stewart

The Carolina Panthers broke up with Jonathan Stewart after ten years. Carolina, who had previously dismissed Safety Kurt Coleman and Defensive End Charles Johnson, continues to use it in Cap Space.

The team announced the release of the 30-year-old running back on Wednesday,”Jonathan played the game as you would like to see it. As a runner, he brought a certain amount of toughness with him and gave the team the rhythm. He’s a great pro and I appreciate who he is as a human being. I thank him for everything he has done for us,”said Head Coach Ron Rivera on the team homepage.

Stewart, the number 13 pick in 2008 draft, has spent his entire career in Carolina. In ten years he recorded 1,699 regular season runs for 7,318 yards and 51 touchdowns. Last season, Stewart became the all-time rushing leader of franchise history.

For the Panthers, the transition continues with the goal of creating cap space. Carolina had previously fired Safety Kurt Coleman and Defensive End Charles Johnson, Stewart’s dismissal bringing the Panthers $3.7 million in additional cap space. Carolina now has $27.2 million in cap space available.
