Cycling: 2:0 against Grabosch: Bird in the sprint final of the track cycling World Championships

Rail bike Olympic champion and top favourite Kristina Vogel (27) has entered the sprint final at the World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

The ten-time world champion from Erfurt defeated her 20-year-old team mate Pauline Grabosch 2-0 in the semi-finals and will face vice world champion Stephanie Morton (Australia) in the final on Friday evening.

Vogel is the defending champion in her showpiece discipline and also dominated the previous World Cup season. On Wednesday she and Miriam Welte (Kaiserslautern) had a perfect start with gold medal in the team sprint. With another triumph she would equal the Australian Anna Meares, who leads the “eternal” ranking with eleven titles.

Grabosch, who had competed convincingly in the team sprint qualification race, also made a strong impression in the sprint competition. Welte, on the other hand, was eliminated in the last sixteen. Morton defeated Hong Kong’s Wai Sze Lee 2-0 in their semi-final.
