Swedish star goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist has set a new record in the NHL. His 36th birthday. Lundqvist’s 50th birthday was celebrated in the Calgary Flames 50 parades at the 3-1 draw of his New York Rangers, making him the first goalie to have fought off 50 shots in two consecutive wins.
Also on Wednesday at the 6:5 victory after extra time at the Vancouver Canucks, the seasoned veteran, who has been playing for the Rangers since 2005, had shown exactly 50 parades. He is only the third goalkeeper in NHL history to have defused 50 or more shots twice in a row.
In 1963, Gump Worsley (two defeats) had also succeeded in doing the same for the Rangers, before which Al Rollins (Chicago Blackhawks/one victory and one defeat) had accomplished the feat. The NHL has been recording the shots fired since 1955.
The playoffs are still out of reach for the team from the Big Apple. With 64 points from 65 games, the Rangers are currently five points away from a wildcard seat in the Eastern Conference.
