Double Olympic champion Marcel Hirscher continued his record hunt in the Alpine Ski World Cup in an impressive manner and won the overall World Cup for the seventh time in a row. With his seasonal victories number eleven and twelve, the Austrian skier of the century also prematurely secured the small crystal balls in the disciplines giant slalom and slalom in the Slovenian Kranjska Gora.
Hirscher won both evaluations for the fifth time. With his seventh overall victory, the 29-year-old surpassed the legendary Annemarie Moser-Pröll (Austria/6). Only Ingemar Stenmark (Sweden/18) and Lindsey Vonn (USA/20) won more crystal balls in the Alpine Ski World Cup.
“That’s so surreal,”Hirscher said in the winning interview about these numbers,”you can’t believe that. After all the preparation problems with the broken ankle, I can’t put that into words.”
In the overall standings Hirscher is 289 points ahead of Crown Prince Henrik Kristoffersen. This means that the Norwegian will be able to play him in the remaining two goal runs at the World Cup finals in Are/Sweden (from 14. March) no more overtaking.
In the slalom on Sunday Hirscher won 1.22 seconds ahead of Kristoffersen. The Swiss Olympic runner-up Ramon Zenhäuser (1.61 seconds behind) finished third. Hirscher had won the giant slalom in front of Kristoffersen and Alexis Pinturault (France) like at the Olympics in Pyeongchang. It was his World Cup victories number 56 and 57.
Sebastian Holzmann (Oberstdorf) as slalom eleventh placed his best World Cup result. Fritz Dopfer (Garmisch), Dominik Stehle (Obermaiselstein) and Linus Straßer (Munich) occupied positions 16,17 and 21. In the giant slalom, Dopfer and Alexander Schmid (fishing) came in 13th and 20th place.
