Golf: WGC in Mexico: Phil Mickelson wins his first tournament since 2013

Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson has completed his five-year thirst on the US tour and won the $10 million World Golf Championship in Mexico City. The US-American prevailed in the jump-off against his fellow countryman Justin Thomas, 23 years his junior. Mickelson celebrated his last victory at the British Open in 2013.

“It’s been hard the last few years,”said Mickelson,”I haven’t played my best golf. But I always believed that I could do it again. Making the breakthrough now is unbelievable.”

Mickelson added that he had the feeling that “even more” was about to come, and that a par 3 on the first play-off hole was enough for him. The left-hander received a total of 43. Success on the U. S. tour earned a premium of 1.7 million dollars, equivalent to about 1.38 million euros.

US PGA champion Justin Thomas meanwhile missed his ninth Tour victory. Behind the US duo, the Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello and the Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, who both needed 269 strokes, shared third place. German pros were not at the start.
