Olympic Games: Paralympics: North and South Korea arrive separately at the opening ceremony

The rapprochement between North and South Korea has its limits: In contrast to the Olympic Games, the two officially hostile countries will not be flying the flag at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics in Pyeongchang on Friday.

This was announced by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on Thursday after talks between the two National Committees (NPC) in the Paralympic Village on Thursday had failed to reach an agreement.

“Although we are disappointed, of course we respect the decision. Both NPCs have decided that it is better for both countries to enter separately,”said IPC President Andrew Parsons.

However, the first-time participation of North Korea in the Winter Paralympics alone is a “big step for the Paralympic Movement and an important sign”, Parsons added:”Both associations want to continue working closely together in the future. This shows the special ability of sport to bring countries into a positive dialogue.”.

A 24-strong North Korean delegation arrived in South Korea on Wednesday. However, only the cross-country skiers Kim Jong Hyon and Ma Yu Chol will compete in the Paralympics. In addition, there are four accompanying runners, four members of the North Korean Paralympics Committee and 14 coaches.

At the Olympics, North and South Korea were together at the opening ceremony, but separately behind their own flags at the closing ceremony. Both countries also had a joint women’s ice hockey team. The delegation from the north included 500 people, including a larger group of cheerleaders.
